Androgynous Trans Dandy Femme
Ze/Them/Their

Xander Dumas is multi-medium artist who works both independently and in collaboration under the name The Dandy Vagabonds. As a queer, non-binary artist, much of their work highlights queer individuals and their experiences. Through their collaboration, The Dandy Vagabonds have performed across the country at such venues as Austin Texas’s ‘OUTsider fest’, San Fransisco’s ‘Topsy Turvy Circus’ and Baltimore’s ‘Transmodern. They have had several installations including, ‘Ruby Moon: A Parade of Vintage Elegance’ in 2014 which explored the work of multiple queer pioneers from the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Ruby Moon was an interactive installation that showcased illustration, multidimensional pieces, performance and fiber arts. In 2017, The Dandy Vagabonds had their second independent gallery exhibition entitled, ‘Moonifestations of Ancestor Earth: A Voyage of Expansion’ which explored the Earth through a cosmic lens.

Independently their work continues to highlight queer individuals, but often through their perspective as an astrologer. In 2016 they had an installation entitled ‘The Queer Zodiac Project’ in which they photographed 12 people all born under different zodiac signs and created 12 short stop motion animations which explored the nuances of each Sun sign. Throughout 2018 and 2019 they created individual pieces within the theme ‘Sabian Symbols’, which are the visualized energies of each degree of the zodiac. Currently they are in a project interviewing queer activists, artists and healers in an illustrated zine compilation due out in a few months.

Xander’s work, both independently and collaboratively, aims to shift the narrative of what queerness is. They honor the spectrum and complexities of being whole outside of stereotypically queer narratives. They like to blend the Cosmos and queereness to expand perspectives and honor the multitudes of the micro and macrocosms.

Artist Statement:

Home is the crashing of the waves, the rising of the Moon, the forest’s shadow upon the mountains. In 2017, artist-astrologer, Xander Dumas packed up their northeast life to spend the following three years living in and out of their minivan as they moved across the country five times. Seeking solitude to release through dense emotions; seeking ocean moonsets to reconnect to awe, they came home to self through the language of the cosmos. Xander is currently sinking into a rhythm of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
