Artist Statement:

Relating to the subject of home, I wanted to create an image which evoked a sense of comfort, serenity and which depicted its subject in a light of adoration. In the midst of the police brutality and white supremacism plaguing our country, I wanted to create a piece which celebrated and glorified black bodies. In the photograph, the model playing Eve lays in a large box surrounded by over 12,000 artificial rose petals. The portrait is not meant to depict the literal reading of the biblical Eve, but rather the figure known as the mitochondrial Eve, who invented language and art, and to whom we owe credit for the civilization of the human race. On the model’s chest is painted a stylization of an Egyptian hieroglyph called “Nefer”, which means “good, pleasant, well, beautiful”. On their arms are painted an encircled A and E, signifying anarchy and equity. Alongside this symbolism are the traditional images of the apple and the snake, signifying the fundamental instrument known as the fruit of the Garden of Eden and that instrument’s philosophical progenitor.
