“A Thorn in my Eye” by Olly Silinski

One piece, unframed.

16 x 12 inch (h x w)
Digital Art on Paper

Artist Statement:

I have a lot of anger about my home. I was raised in a Catholic household unsupportive of my identity and sexuality. I had to live two separate lives until I was able to move out. At home I was straight, cis, and Catholic so I could still have a roof over my head. At school I was none those. I borrowed and wore clothes from my dude friends so I could feel more like myself.

The thorns coiling around the figure represents my relationship with my parents. They obscure the eyes, clouding the figure’s vision of their self in a painful way. The thorns grow not from the roses, but from the figure.

The shields with roses represent my relationship with the world. After growing up in a toxic environment due to my trans and lesbian identities and wrestling with PTSD from sexual assault I experienced in high school, I find it extremely difficult to trust and feel safe around unfamiliar and familiar people.
