Artist Statement:
Like a lot of people, I manage multiple mental illnesses. Everybody handles it differently, but for me the structure of getting up and having somewhere to go every day is a big part of how I deal. There’s a whole system of activities built around having somewhere to go each day that inform health and healing; food, body care, recreation, etc. Since COVID, home as acted as a Jekyll and Hyde. Home is the only place that’s safe, the only place that’s exactly how you want it, the only place to be alone just how you are, with no judgement. It’s also the place where depression creeps and waits for an opening to trap you. In this piece, I used poetry to describe that juxtaposition, and embroidery to fully express it.
